Controversy about GMOs

Do you know anything about Genetically Modified Organisms? Probably the same as many people: that there are some vegetables that in their DNA include genes from other organisms. But that’s not the only thing a GMO could be: any organism obtained in a lab that has changes included by a person in its genetic information, what means that a scientist can make that something that the organism has increases its production, for example.
It is true that many people fear GMOs, it is said that they could produce more allergic reactions, they could damage other plants and animals, and so on.
The fact is that Scientists are not really sure about the effects that they could have on human-beings in the long term – but we also ignore what the effects of using wi-fi and mobile phones could be in the future. What we know about GMOs is that they have more walls in their way: they have to be tested once and again during years before they can be destined to consumers, they are the most tested food – if they are to become animal or human food. And that’s why the GMOs we can eat right now are less harmful than any other food on sale.
However, in Europe OMG food is really banned, only a few transgenic vegetables are allowed – in 2010 it was approved to plant 4 new transgenic vegetables after 12 years without any new ones beeing allowed.

Because of that kind of fear we have here in the UE, it was forbidden to import any GMO from United States, or Canada, for example, and that annoyed the US: as the UE said that GMO were potentially harmful for our health, the US claimed that there was no proof of such statement.

Anyway, GMOs are being investigated in many countries and each year more transgenic vegetables are planted. It is probably that, in order not to be left behind, the UE will be more open to this kind of food in the future, that’s the progress flow…

A Few Points to Keep in Mind ( Use this as a check list)

   . First write your ideas in a draft in order to brainstorm and to organise them.

    .  Use connectors to link your ideas logically and correctly. ( see list below )

    . Use the appropriate style. Avoid contractions (don't/isn't/ hasn't etc) in formal style.

   . Use a varied vocabulary.

    . Pay attention to the punctuation and to capital letters.

     .Pay attention to the grammar.( For example, check the verbs, singular and plural, 3rd person singular -      count and non-count nouns etc. )

      .While writing a draft, underline words or expressions you are not sure about.

      .Rewrite (if necessary) and this time check with your dictionary.

      .Count the words to see that you have not written less than you have to.

       .Write legibly.

       .Don’t forget to skip a line between the different paragraphs

Multiple Intelligences

Howard Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences was first put forward in 1983.

The Theory of Multiple Intelligences, challenges the standard view of education in the fact that it opposes the notion of intelligence as a unitary capacity made up of linguistic and logical-mathematical abilities exclusively; besides, according to this theory, intelligence is not a fixed capacity -something we are born with and we cannot do much about-, but rather a continually evolving process throughout a person's lifetime.

Gardner and his collaborators in the areas of cognitive science, of developmental psychology, and of neuroscience carried out studies -with patients who had suffered brain damage, with talented people, with normal children and with people from different cultures - led them to some conclusions regarding the nature and characterconclusions we would like to emphasize the following ones that offer a global summary of his theory :
-Intelligence is made of distinct units of intellectual development that may function in isolation or in conjunction with each other.

-It is an amalgam of abilities that allow the individual to solve problems and situations

-It can be defined as "the capacity to solve problems or to fashion products that are valued in one or more cultural settings" (Gardner & Hatch, 1989)

-Each person has a particular strength in each area and a singular, unique blend of dynamic intelligences

-All (eight) intelligences are needed to function productively in society

-It is an interaction between biological proclivities and opportunities for learning in a particular context; we are all born possessing the eight intelligences, but we differ in the particular intelligence profile we are born with; besides, Gardner is convinced that we all can achieve a reasonably high level of performance in all areas of intelligences with the appropriate stimulation, encouragement and instruction.

You know that I love the new technologies and I strongly believe they play an important role in teaching.Nowadays,education is changing or at least,it should by now,but we must pay attention and reflect on what our attitude towards learning is if we want a real change,if we want it to come true.
An interesting experiment is taking place in Hedenderson, a town in Minneapolis.“New Country school” is about a different school with no teachers.
Students don´t take lessons and they just work in an environment which looks like an office rather than a school.All the students come together into a big room, they sit at desks and they spend most of the day in front of their personal computers working on interdisciplinary projects .There is no bell to interrupt what they are doing and they feel free to move around whenever they want.
There no teachers in the traditional way but “advisers”,adults who are seen as guides to learning.

New Country Principles:

• No classes. Students work on projects they select themselves. Projects are tailored to fulfill state curriculum requirements.
• No teachers. Students consult with "advisers" who are available through the day to guide their work. Advisers do not "teach" in the traditional sense. They guide students' work.
• No hierarchy. The school is run like an agricultural cooperative. Advisers are owners, rather than employees. There is no principal.
• No bells, no firm schedule. Time is set aside for lunch and for quiet reading. Other than that, students choose how to spend their time. If they fall behind, advisers help them get back on track.
• No walls. Students work in an open environment and can confer with other students and advisers as needed. There's no central office.
• And no janitors. Students clean the bathrooms and the rest of the school themselves.
